We’re back with another Reset alum testimonial with Jess Okunola, a first-time attendee in 2019. Jess had seen posts about the Reset Conference from one of our breakout speakers and styled shoot leaders Erin Dorsey, and decided to take a leap of faith and go.
Tell us a little about yourself!
I’m Jess! I’m from Southern Illinois and I picked up photography as a hobby just last year. This is the first time I’ve considered starting my own business, and I was so excited to attend the Reset Conference to learn from so many experienced photographers. I love photography because I love capturing those really special moments for people to hold onto forever. I’ve always loved printing and hanging my own photos in my home; it gives me such a sense of gratitude as I see them on the walls. I love being able to give families the same thing.
Tell us your Reset story. Why did you decide to attend the Conference?
My friend Erin [Dorsey] was presenting and I reached out and asked if this would be something that could benefit me. I was nervous because I’m in no way a professional, and I wasn’t sure I was even qualified to attend. She assured me that I would learn so much and have such a blast, and I’m SO glad I did!
What is the best thing you took away from Reset in 2019?
My biggest takeaway from the conference was that you have to stay true and genuine to yourself and what YOU enjoy shooting. I want to always feed this passion, and I won’t be able to do that if I’m trying to fulfill other people’s visions and not my own. Since the conference, I try to always remember to put my true self out there and the right clients will come my way.

What lesson stuck with you the most and reappears in your life now that the conference is over?
Shoot for you. 🙂 Be yourself and you’ll attract all the right clients. It’s okay if your style isn’t someone else’s.
Why should a photographer attend this conference?
Not only do you walk away with so much knowledge on shooting, posing, business tips, etc, but you fill your soul with good conversation with people who have the same passion as you.
